In order to change gender, neutral people or those whose sexual characteristics do not agree with their sexual orientations and desires can apply for gender change. After registering their application in the welfare organization, the applicants are sent to the court and examined by the forensic medicine. If their needs are confirmed legally and with the diagnosis of a doctor and a competent court, the court will immediately issue the necessary orders to perform surgery and issue identification documents stating the new gender.

In the text of Iran’s law, there are no special regulations on this issue. But unlike other Islamic countries, gender reassignment surgery in Iran is possible for anyone who passes psychological interviews and can pay for the operation.
